Duplicate vs New Ad Set

In one lineCopying an ad set still means learning from zero.
Duplicate vs New Ad Set illustration

Duplicating an ad set copies its whole setup into a fresh one, while creating a new ad set builds from scratch. Either way you get a brand-new ad set that has to learn on its own, from zero.

The trap here is a quiet assumption people make: that a duplicate somehow inherits the winning ad set's momentum. It does not. A duplicated ad set is a new ad set. It walks into its own learning phase and has to gather its own roughly fifty events before it settles, exactly like one you built by hand, because none of the original's learning transfers across. So the only real difference between duplicating and creating new is convenience: duplicating saves you re-entering the settings, nothing more. The learning bill is identical.

This matters most when you are trying to scale a winner, because duplicating it feels like the safe move and often is not. The copy competes with the original for the same people, which is how you create audience overlap, your own two ad sets bidding against each other in the auction and pushing your costs up. You wanted more of a good thing and instead you split its budget and made it fight itself, while both halves sit in fresh learning at once.

Reach for a duplicate only when the new ad set is genuinely different enough not to overlap the original. A new audience, a different geography, a separate angle, those justify a second ad set. Copying a winner onto the same audience to "scale" it usually just buys you two learning phases and an overlap problem. If the audience is the same, raising the existing budget is often the cleaner move than cloning.

A duplicate is not a head start, it is a second ad set starting from zero, so only make one when it is truly a different bet.
