Audience Overlap

In one lineTwo audiences share people, and quietly compete.

Audience overlap is when two or more of your ad sets are aimed at many of the same people, so Meta's per-person auction ends up pitting your own ad sets against each other.

You have two ad sets live and you tell yourself you are running a clean test. One targets people interested in yoga, the other targets people interested in wellness. On paper those look like separate groups. In practice a huge share of the same women in Bangkok sit inside both, and every time Meta gets ready to show one of them an ad, it runs an auction for that single impression. Your yoga ad set and your wellness ad set both raise their hand for the same person, and Meta happily lets them bid against each other. You are the buyer on both sides of that auction, which means you are quietly paying more to reach a person you were already going to reach.

This matters because overlap is a slow money leak that never shows up as a line item. Your costs drift up, your reach does not grow to match, and the two ad sets you meant to compare are now contaminated by the fact that they were fighting over the same inventory. You cannot trust the read on either one. Meta gives you an Audience Overlap tool in your account settings that shows you exactly how much any two audiences share, and it is worth checking before you assume two ad sets are actually testing two different things.

The fix here is almost never to add more ad sets, it is to run fewer. When two audiences overlap heavily, you either fold them into one ad set and let Meta sort out delivery, or you set up exclusions so each ad set is pointed at a genuinely distinct group of people. Both moves kill the internal competition. This is one more reason the modern instinct leans toward fewer, broader ad sets instead of a pile of narrow ones stacked on top of each other, and to be clear that leaning is my own read on how the platform behaves today, not a rule Meta hands you.

If your ad sets are bidding against each other, the only winner is Meta.
