In-app messages are the banners, modals, and tooltips you show people while they are already inside your app, used for onboarding, promotions, and pointing out features they have not found yet.

You already have someone's attention: they opened the app and they are looking at the screen. In-app messaging is how you talk to them in that moment. A welcome card that walks a new user through the first step. A tooltip that highlights a button nobody clicks. A banner announcing a sale to a person who is already browsing. Because the message appears inside the running app, you do not need a separate permission for it the way you do with push. They are here, so you are allowed to speak.

You get to be timely in a way other channels cannot match. You can show a tip exactly when someone reaches the screen it applies to, or surface an offer right as they hesitate at checkout. Done well, it feels like the app is helping rather than selling, guiding a person past the exact spot where they would otherwise get stuck and leave. You should still be deliberate about frequency and placement, because a modal that blocks the screen every session stops being guidance and starts being a toll booth.

Here is the limit worth naming. In-app messages only reach people who are already active. They cannot win back someone who stopped opening the app, because that person never sees them. For a lapsed user you need push, email, or paid ads instead. And overusing in-app messages turns a helpful nudge into an annoyance people learn to dismiss on reflex, which trains them to ignore the one you actually needed them to see.

In-app messaging talks to the people in the room; it cannot call back the ones who left.
