The video views objective optimizes to get people to watch your video and bills you around those views.

You upload the video and X serves it to people likely to watch, counting a view on its own definition of one. It is a consideration objective: cheaper than chasing a click, and useful when the message lives inside the footage and you want it seen playing.

Say your video gets forty thousand views for a set budget. Cost per view is low, but in Ads Manager you open the retention graph and see most people drop at three seconds. The view count flatters you; the retention curve tells you the first three seconds are not doing their job.

A counted view is a very low bar. People read the view total as interest, when a large share of those views are a second or two of autoplay that nobody chose.

Watch the drop-off, not the view count.
