UTM Parameters

UTM parameters are small tags you add to the end of a link so your analytics knows exactly where a click came from.

You bolt them onto a URL with a question mark, and they carry labels like source, medium, and campaign name. When someone clicks that link and lands on your site, GA4 reads the tags and files the visit under the right source, so you are not guessing whether traffic came from your newsletter, an ad, or a partner's post.

For example, you tag your email link like yoursite.com/?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=august_launch. Every click through that link shows up in GA4 grouped under the August launch email, cleanly separated from your other traffic.

The catch is that UTMs are only as good as your discipline. They are case sensitive and free text, so "Email," "email," and "e-mail" become three separate sources, and one sloppy teammate can fragment a campaign's data into a dozen useless rows.

Tag it right or fly blind on where your traffic actually comes from.
