First-party data is the customer information you collected yourself, directly from people who dealt with your business.
It is the email someone typed at checkout, the phone number they gave when they booked, the list of who bought what and when. You own it because they handed it to you. That is different from third-party data, which is information about people you never met, packaged up and sold to you by a data broker.
Open your own store backend or CRM right now and look at the export button. Every row in that customer file is first-party data. If you run a shop that took a thousand orders last month, you already hold a thousand real emails and phone numbers. You did not buy them and nobody can take them away when the next privacy change lands.
First-party data is only as good as the day you cleaned it. Typos, dead email addresses, and old phone numbers all sit in the same file, and a stale list matches badly and targets the wrong people. It needs upkeep, not just collection.
The data you own beats the data you rent, every single time.
