The rule that tells Snapchat how to bid for you in the auction: auto-bid, target cost, or max bid.
You choose one of three controls per ad set. Auto-bid hands the bid to Snap to spend your budget for the most results it can get. Target cost aims to hold your average cost per action around a number you set while it scales. Max bid caps the most you will pay for a single result and never bids above it. Each trades control against delivery differently.
You launch a new ad set with auto-bid to gather data and let Snap find the price. Once you know your action costs around a stable figure, you switch to target cost at that number to hold efficiency while you push budget up, instead of watching cost per result drift as you scale.
Max bid is the one people misuse. Set the cap too low and the ad set simply loses the auction and stops delivering, then they conclude Snapchat "does not work." A cap is a ceiling, not a wish. If you cannot win impressions, the bid is the problem, not the platform.
Start on auto-bid. Only tighten control once you know the price.
