Core Audience

A core audience is one you build yourself by handing Meta the rules for who should see the ad: age, gender, location, language, and then interests and behaviors on top of that. It is the classic "you describe the person" audience, and it sits apart from a custom audience, which is people you already know and upload, and a lookalike, which is people who resemble your existing customers.

You open Ads Manager, you set the filters, and Meta goes and finds people who fit inside them. Say you sell running shoes and you tell Meta to show the ad to women aged 25 to 40 in Bangkok who follow running pages and have shown an interest in fitness. That is a core audience. You have drawn the box, and Meta stays inside it.

It matters because it is the starting point most people picture when they think about targeting, and it still earns its place. When you genuinely know who your buyer is and you want to point Meta at a defined group, or when you are just starting out and have no customer data to build a custom audience or a lookalike from yet, a core audience gives the system a sensible frame to work within.

Here is the part that trips people up: Meta's system is often better than your filters at finding buyers, especially once it has real conversion data to learn from. Every extra narrow rule you pile on is another wall you build around the auction, and those walls can cut Meta off from people who would have bought if you had let it reach them. So use a core audience to give the system a reasonable starting frame, not to micromanage every last detail of who it is allowed to show your ad to.

Draw the box wide enough for Meta to do its job, then get out of the way.
