Advantage Detailed Targeting

Advantage detailed targeting is Meta being allowed to go past the interests and behaviors you typed into the detailed targeting box, and show your ad to people outside that list whenever it thinks it can get you a cheaper or better result.

You picked your interests carefully. Maybe you added a few job titles, a couple of buying behaviors, an interest or two that matches your customer exactly, and you expected the ad to stay inside those lines. With this setting on, it does not have to. Meta reads the people who actually respond to your ad, spots others who look like them, and reaches past the interests you chose to go and find them. This is the setting that used to be called detailed targeting expansion, so if you remember that name, it is the same thing wearing new clothes.

It matters because it explains something that quietly confuses a lot of people, which is why your ad keeps landing on people who do not match the interests you were so careful about. That is not a bug and it is not Meta ignoring you. It is Meta deciding, on purpose, that it found results it liked outside the box you drew, and going after them. Once you see it that way, the reach that used to look wrong starts to make sense.

This should change how you treat the detailed targeting box in the first place. Since Meta may walk past your interests anyway, piling on more and more of them to feel precise is mostly wasted effort, because you are tightening a fence the system is allowed to step over. Give it a sensible starting hint, one clean signal of who your customer is, and let the expansion do its work instead of fighting it. Do still check your placements and your results, because expansion can occasionally carry your ad somewhere you did not intend it to go.

Treat your interests as a hint you hand Meta, not a wall you build around it.
