Smart Bidding

In one lineGoogle sets each bid in real time toward your goal.

Smart Bidding is Google's family of automated strategies that set each bid in real time, using signals about the user and their context to chase a conversion goal you pick.

You turn it on when you are tired of guessing what a click is worth. Instead of one fixed bid for a keyword, Google looks at the person doing the searching, their device, location, time of day, and dozens of other signals, then decides how much to bid in the split second before the auction runs. It does this for every single auction, which is something no human sitting at a screen can match.

You feed it a goal and it works backward from there. Tell it you want more conversions, or a certain cost per conversion, or a certain return, and it pushes your bids up on the searches that look likely to convert and down on the ones that do not. You will meet it under names like Target CPA, Target ROAS, Maximize Conversions, and Maximize Conversion Value. Those are not separate machines, they are the same engine pointed at different goals, and older manual helpers like Enhanced CPC have been retired, so if you want Google to bid for you, this is the road you are on.

It only knows what your tracking tells it. Smart Bidding lives entirely on your conversion data, so if your tracking is broken, double counting, or firing on the wrong page, the system bids confidently toward the wrong target. It also needs enough conversions to learn from; a campaign pulling a handful a month gives it too little to work with, and it will happily spend while it guesses.

Automation is only as smart as the data you feed it.
