Search Themes

In one lineKeyword-style hints for Performance Max.

Search Themes are an input in Performance Max where you tell Google the search topics your customers use, giving the automation a keyword-style hint about where to look.

You reach for them when a Performance Max campaign feels like a black box and you want some say over the searches it chases. You type in the words and phrases your buyers actually use, up to fifty per asset group, and Google treats them as a signal about intent rather than making you guess whether the system already understands your offer. It is the closest thing PMax gives you to adding keywords.

You will get the most from them when you know a valuable search pattern the automation has not found yet, especially for a new product or a niche your assets do not spell out clearly. Google says search themes get the same prioritization as your phrase and broad match keywords, so they carry real weight in the auction, not just a polite suggestion.

Keep one thing in mind. Search themes guide the system, they do not fence it in, and they are additive to the queries PMax already predicts will work. They can also overlap and compete with your dedicated Search campaigns for the same terms. Use them to point PMax in a direction, and lean on negatives and account structure if you need to keep it out of a lane.

They steer the campaign; they never put it on rails.
