Product targeting shows your ad on specific product detail pages or across whole categories instead of on search terms.
You point the campaign at individual ASINs or at a category, and Amazon places your ad on those detail pages and category browse results. You can refine a category target by price, brand, or star rating so it hits a narrower set of products.
You sell a phone case for one model. You target the ASIN of the phone itself and the ASINs of three rival cases, so your ad appears on all four detail pages.
Category targets go wide fast. A single category can hold tens of thousands of ASINs, most of them irrelevant to you, so without price and rating refinements you pay for placements on products no one cross-shops with yours.
Aim at pages, not guesses.
